{"id":16300,"date":"2015-09-29T06:49:04","date_gmt":"2015-09-29T06:49:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=16300"},"modified":"2015-09-29T06:49:04","modified_gmt":"2015-09-29T06:49:04","slug":"the-inskip-sinkhole-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/09\/29\/the-inskip-sinkhole-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The Inskip sinkhole in Australia &#8211; undoubtedly a landslide"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Inskip Sinkhole<\/h5>\n<p>The Inskip Sinkhole, as described in various media reports, developed on the Inskip Peninsular at MV Beagle Point, north of Rainbow Beach, on Saturday night:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16301\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Inskip-1-e1443508069624.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16301\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16301\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Inskip-1-e1443508069624.jpg\" alt=\"Inskip Sinkhole\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16301\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">(<a href=\"http:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/2015\/09\/28\/queensland-sinkhole-peninsular-may-fall-away-entirely\">AAP Image\/Higgins Storm Chasing<\/a>)<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Descriptions of the event sound quite exciting, with a caravan, a trailer a car and some tents disappearing into the sea.\u00a0 Fortunately there was no loss of life.\u00a0 The best gallery of images of the aftermath can be found on the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au\/news\/theories-differ-on-effect-of-earthquakes\/2789906\/#\/0\">Sunshine Daily Coast website<\/a>, from which this image is taken:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16302\" style=\"width: 630px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Inskip-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16302\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16302\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Inskip-2.jpg\" alt=\"Inskip Sinkhole \" width=\"620\" height=\"413\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Inskip-2.jpg 620w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Inskip-2-300x200.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 620px) 100vw, 620px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16302\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Inskip Sinkhole from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au\/news\/theories-differ-on-effect-of-earthquakes\/2789906\/#\/0\">Sunshine Coast Daily<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>In the last couple of days the media have realised that this is not in fact a sinkhole, but is undoubtedly a submarine landslide.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au\/news\/theories-differ-on-effect-of-earthquakes\/2789906\/#\/0\">This report gets it right<\/a>:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>A Queensland Parks and Wildlife spokeswoman said the event was unlikely to be related to or caused by earthquake activity.\u00a0 &#8220;Rather, it&#8217;s most likely a natural phenomenon caused by the undermining of part of the shoreline by rapid tidal flow, waves and currents,&#8221; she said.\u00a0 &#8220;When this occurs below the waterline, the shoreline loses support and a section slides seaward, leaving a hole, the edges of which retrogress back towards the shore.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.au\/news\/scientist-warns-lives-will-be-lost\/2788533\/\">This rather breathless report<\/a> suggests that such events are not particularly uncommon on this section of coastline:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;A similar &#8220;sinkhole&#8221; event in the area was reported in 2011, and Rainbow Beach locals recalled &#8220;numerous&#8221; events.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It would be fascinating to see some high resolution bathymetry data for this area as these slope failure events should leave a very distinctive deposit on the seabed.\u00a0 The above report quotes a local geologist, Ted Griffin, in explaining the phenomena:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;He said a large channel between Inskip Pt and Fraser Island regularly builds up a &#8220;shoulder&#8221; of sand, and falls away.\u00a0 &#8220;This is a big channel, perhaps 50 or 100 metres. It&#8217;s just a very unstable cliff of sand,&#8221; he said.\u00a0 &#8220;It seems to me very poor planning, that they&#8217;ve allowed development so close to such a vulnerable area.&#8221;<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>However, the exact mechanism of failure, and its causes, are not clear to me and would be worthy of further investigation.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>On Saturday a section of beach dramatically collapsed in Queensland, Australia to form the Inskip Sinkhole.
