{"id":16266,"date":"2015-09-27T06:19:52","date_gmt":"2015-09-27T06:19:52","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=16266"},"modified":"2015-09-27T06:19:52","modified_gmt":"2015-09-27T06:19:52","slug":"tonzang-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/09\/27\/tonzang-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Tonzang landslide: a new giant landslide in Chin Division, Burma (Myanmar)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Tonzang landslide<\/h5>\n<p>Late in July extremely heavy rainfall affected Chin Division in Burma (Myanmar), triggering extensive landsliding and flooding.\u00a0 This event has been very little reported, but all of the indications were that the impacts were substantial.\u00a0 I have been trying to track down further information about this event ever since, and have now come across some information about it.\u00a0 In particular, it is now clear that the rainfall triggered what appears to be at least one giant (i.e. &gt; million cubic metre) landslide.\u00a0 Whilst the area has been cloud covered since the disaster, Unosat have managed to obtain a partially cloud-free\u00a0Pleiades image of the area, and have<a href=\"http:\/\/unosat-maps.web.cern.ch\/unosat-maps\/MM\/FL20150703MMR\/UNOSAT_A3_20150703MMR_Landscape_Tonzang_Landslide_20150916.pdf\"> posted an interpretative image on their website<\/a>:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_16270\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Tonzang-1-e1443332304453.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-16270\" class=\"size-full wp-image-16270\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/09\/15_09-Tonzang-1-e1443332304453.jpg\" alt=\"Tonzang landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"477\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-16270\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Tonzang landslide via <a href=\"http:\/\/unosat-maps.web.cern.ch\/unosat-maps\/MM\/FL20150703MMR\/UNOSAT_A3_20150703MMR_Landscape_Tonzang_Landslide_20150916.pdf\">UNOSAT<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>This is a very large landslide &#8211; the red area is the lake that has formed behind the landslide dam &#8211; this is 34 hectares in surface area according to UNOSAT.\u00a0 The part of the landslide that is visible here appears to be more than a kilometre wide and at least 3 km long.\u00a0 But note that all we are seeing here is the deposit &#8211;
