{"id":15609,"date":"2015-07-22T07:07:11","date_gmt":"2015-07-22T07:07:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=15609"},"modified":"2015-07-22T07:07:11","modified_gmt":"2015-07-22T07:07:11","slug":"chamoli-a-large-and-spectacular-failure-caught-on-video","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/07\/22\/chamoli-a-large-and-spectacular-failure-caught-on-video\/","title":{"rendered":"Chamoli: a large and spectacular failure caught on video"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Chamoli landslide<\/h5>\n<p>News 24 has posted the following video on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=00K50jfMF5k\">Youtube in the last 24 hours<\/a>.\u00a0 It was apparently shot in <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Chamoli_district\">Chamoli District<\/a> of Uttarakand in northern India, but I have no further information.\u00a0 It is a spectacular failure, as the screen shot below shows:-<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15615\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/07\/15_07-Chamoli-1-e1437548128482.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15615\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15615\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/07\/15_07-Chamoli-1-e1437548128482.jpg\" alt=\"Chamoli\" width=\"640\" height=\"406\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15615\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Chamoli landslide via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=00K50jfMF5k\">News24<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>I recommend fast forwarding to about 18 seconds to see the event properly:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/00K50jfMF5k\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile heavy rains also appear to be causing problems in other parts of the mountains of Central and South Asia:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Chitral, northern Pakistan, <a href=\"http:\/\/tribune.com.pk\/story\/924169\/tenacious-disaster-300000-families-displaced-in-chitral\/\">reports suggest<\/a> that 300,000 families have been displaced by flash floods.\u00a0 It is likely that many of these events will be debris flows.<\/li>\n<li>In Tajikistan, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/content\/tajikistan-mudslides\/27140831.html\">mudslides killed seven people<\/a> in Vanch district of Gorno-Badakhshan.<\/li>\n<li>There are signs that the heavily remediated Varunavat Parvat landslide in Utterkashi, northern India, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/uttarakhand\/varunavat-parvat-a-cause-of-tension\/109687.html\">has reactivated<\/a>.<\/li>\n<li>In Chechnya a<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rferl.org\/content\/chechnya-dagestan-minibus-crash-kills-at-least-seven\/27142284.html\"> minibus fell from a road<\/a> near to the village of Kharachoy in Vedensky District , killing at least seven and possibly eleven people, and injuring a further six.\u00a0 Reports suggest that the vehicle was struck by a rockfall or landslide.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>But on the brighter side, the impact of landslides in the earthquake affected areas of Nepal has been lower than feared, primarily because so far the rainfall has not been excessive to date.\u00a0 There is still a long way to go in the 2015 monsoon though, and the real danger is from cloud burst events that can occur at any time.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>News24 has posted a video of a large and dramatic landslide that occurred in Chamoli, Uttarakhand this week.
