The left upper portion of picture is the area where the landslide occurred, an estimated 374,000 cubic meters of debris. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abs-cbnnews.com\/image\/nation\/regions\/07\/20\/15\/buried-alive-aerial-photos-semirara-mine-collapse-2\">Via ABS CBN<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.abs-cbnnews.com\/image\/nation\/regions\/07\/20\/15\/buried-alive-aerial-photos-semirara-mine-collapse-2\">ABS CBN report<\/a> suggests that this is a very large landslide &#8211; 374,000 cubic metres.\u00a0 The failure appears to be a rotational slip with quite a high level of mobility at the toe.\u00a0 The report also indicates that the slope was being monitored with prisms (i.e. optical surveying), so it is quite surprising that such high levels of loss occurred.\u00a0 I would be very interested to see the data.<\/p>\n<p>Anyway, there is a video version of the news report on the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=iGjBoioEzLY\">Youtube website<\/a>.\u00a0 This includes a section of video that I have not seen before &#8211; it starts about 20 seconds into the report &#8211; that shows an earlier (smaller) landslide in the same mine:<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/iGjBoioEzLY\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This is quite interesting in terms of the way that it starts as a comparatively small cliff collapse but then fragments on impact to transition into a high mobility flow.\u00a0 It is understandable that the effects are so dramatic when people get in the way of these landslides.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last week a landslide in a coal mine on the island of Semirara killed nine miners.
