{"id":15240,"date":"2015-06-21T09:17:23","date_gmt":"2015-06-21T09:17:23","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=15240"},"modified":"2015-06-21T09:17:23","modified_gmt":"2015-06-21T09:17:23","slug":"tbilisi-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/06\/21\/tbilisi-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Tbilisi, Georgia:- a landslide dam-break flood killed 19 people"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Tbilisi flood &#8211; 14th June 2015<\/h5>\n<p>A week ago, on Sunday 14th June, a flash flood ripped through a part of Tbilisi, the capital city of Georgia, <a href=\"http:\/\/finchannel.com\/index.php\/world\/georgian-news\/item\/45350-eu-supports-georgia-in-the-aftermath-of-the-severe-floods-in-tbilisi\">causing a very significant amount of damage<\/a>:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15222\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-1-e1434609680916.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15222\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15222\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-1-e1434609680916.jpg\" alt=\"Tibilisi flood\" width=\"640\" height=\"428\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15222\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/2015_Tbilisi_flood\">Wikipedia<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The floods are <a href=\"http:\/\/www.azernews.az\/region\/84065.html\">known to have killed 19 people<\/a> and to have injured a further 457 people.\u00a0 Three people remain missing.\u00a0 The flood inundated Tbilisi Zoo, killing large numbers of animals and releasing many more:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15226\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-2-e1434609890854.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15226\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15226\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-2-e1434609890854.jpg\" alt=\"Tbilisi flood\" width=\"640\" height=\"369\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15226\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.mirror.co.uk\/news\/world-news\/tbilisi-flood-harrowing-new-pictures-5888579\">Daily Mirror<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week<a href=\"http:\/\/edition.cnn.com\/2015\/06\/17\/europe\/georgia-tbilisi-zoo-floods-death\/\"> it was reported<\/a> that a tiger that escaped from the zoo killed a man before being shot.\u00a0 Another tiger was thought to be on the on the loose, but I am unsure as to whether it has been recaptured.\u00a0 News reports also suggest that one of the penguins in the zoo made a bid for freedom.\u00a0 In an effort that is somewhat reminiscent of a scene from <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/The_Great_Escape_%28film%29\">The Great Escape<\/a> it was finally recaptured 60 km downstream.<\/p>\n<p>Understandably, the flood has been very controversial in Georgia.\u00a0 Whilst I am not really able to comment on the factors that underlie the event, it is clear that the flood itself was caused by the collapse of a landslide dam created on the Vere River near to the village of Akhaldaba.\u00a0 The Georgian Government has produced a video animation of the landslide and flood.\u00a0 Unfortunately due to a hosting problem associated with upgrading the software that hosts this site, I cannot embed videos at present.\u00a0 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1QjmA1y6dx4\">However, you can access it via the Youtube website<\/a>. Although it is not in English, the sequence of events is clear, representing a classic cascading sequence of heavy rainfall, slope failure, valley-blockage, lake formation, dam collapse and catastrophic flood \/ debris flow.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide is estimated to have had a volume of about 1 million cubic metres.\u00a0 This still from the video above shows the slide:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-3.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-15230\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-3.jpg\" alt=\"Tbilisi landslide\" width=\"489\" height=\"360\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-3.jpg 489w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Tbilisi-3-300x221.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 489px) 100vw, 489px\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide appears to be a shallow failure for the post part, possibly with a rotational component in the headscarp area.\u00a0 There appears to be a lot of water on the shear surface.\u00a0 Interestingly, Tbilisi also suffered devastating floods on a number of previous occasions, and the zoo has been destroyed by floods on the Vere River at least once before.\u00a0 It would be interesting to know if these earlier events were also due to landslide dams on the Vere River .<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Last Sunday a flash flood killed at least 19 people and destroyed the zoo in Tbilisi, Georgia.
