{"id":15211,"date":"2015-06-15T06:38:19","date_gmt":"2015-06-15T06:38:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=15211"},"modified":"2015-06-15T06:38:45","modified_gmt":"2015-06-15T06:38:45","slug":"landslides-in-art-part-22-aberfan-7-pianos-percussion-voice-and-tools-of-rescue","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/06\/15\/landslides-in-art-part-22-aberfan-7-pianos-percussion-voice-and-tools-of-rescue\/","title":{"rendered":"Landslides in Art Part 22: Aberfan (7 pianos, percussion, voice and tools of rescue)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Aberfan: 7 pianos, percussion, voice and tools of rescue<\/h5>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/laurasiersema.com\/\">Laura Siersema<\/a> is a composer and poet based in western Massachusetts in the USA.\u00a0 In the aftermath of the terrible <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2011\/10\/21\/remembering-the-aberfan-disaster-45-years-ago-today\/\">1966 Aberfan landslide disaster in Wales<\/a>, in which 116 children and 28 adults were killed when a coal mine spoil heap collapsed and buried a school, her mother wrote a folk song &#8220;In a town called Aberfan&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Aberfan-1-e1434349788434.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" size-full wp-image-15212 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Aberfan-1-e1434349788434.jpg\" alt=\"Aberfan\" width=\"640\" height=\"431\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>As we approach the 50th anniversary of the disaster next year, Laura has been working on anew, much longer piece about the disaster entitled <span class=\"printOutStyle\"><em>Aberfan<\/em>\u00a0<em>(7 pianos, percussion, voice and tools of rescue)<\/em><\/span>. In Laura&#8217;s words:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>&#8220;My mother wrote a folk song, \u201cIn a Town Called Aberfan,\u201d in the wake of the tragedy, that I used to hear when I was a child. I have been compelled for years to work on an adaptation of my own.
