{"id":15183,"date":"2015-06-05T07:25:04","date_gmt":"2015-06-05T07:25:04","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=15183"},"modified":"2015-06-05T07:25:04","modified_gmt":"2015-06-05T07:25:04","slug":"malaysia-earthquake-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/06\/05\/malaysia-earthquake-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Malaysia earthquake: early reports of seismically-triggered landslides"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Malaysia earthquake<\/h5>\n<p>Early on Friday morning (local time) a shallow (depth = 10 km) <a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/us20002m5s#impact_pager:us_us20002m5s\">M=6.0 earthquake<\/a> struck the west coast of Sabah in Malaysia:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15184\" style=\"width: 592px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15184\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15184\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-1.jpg\" alt=\"Malaysia earthquake\" width=\"582\" height=\"645\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-1.jpg 582w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-1-271x300.jpg 271w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 582px) 100vw, 582px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15184\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/earthquake.usgs.gov\/earthquakes\/eventpage\/us20002m5s#impact_pager:us_us20002m5s\">USGS<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>Whilst not being large, this earthquake appears to have been responsible for at least some landslide activity.\u00a0 The clearest reports at the moment at from Mount Kinabalu, which is a popular trekking\/climbing route.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.in\/malaysia-earthquake-5-climbers-mt-kinabalu-feared-dead-after-6-0-magnitude-quake-634771\">IBT Times is reporting<\/a> that at least five climbers were killed close to the summit of the mountain:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>The quake caused\u00a0huge <span id=\"IL_AD5\" class=\"IL_AD\">boulders<\/span> and rocks to roll down the <span id=\"IL_AD4\" class=\"IL_AD\">mountain<\/span> as the\u00a0climbers were descending at about 7.17 am, the report said.<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Interestingly, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/News\/Nation\/2015\/06\/05\/Sabah-tremors-Donkey-Ear-peak\/\">The Star<\/a> has an image that suggests that there has been a major rockfall at the summit of the mountain that has profoundly changed the geomorphology of the peak, known as the Donkey&#8217;s ears:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_15185\" style=\"width: 597px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-15185\" class=\"size-full wp-image-15185\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-2.jpg\" alt=\"Malaysia earthquake\" width=\"587\" height=\"320\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-2.jpg 587w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/06\/15_06-Malaysia-2-300x164.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 587px) 100vw, 587px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-15185\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/News\/Nation\/2015\/06\/05\/Sabah-tremors-Donkey-Ear-peak\/\">The Star<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This would be a very substantive rockfall.\u00a0 There is also some early footage from the foot of the mountain that appears to show dust plumes created by the rockfalls:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/mWIR7N6DhEA\" width=\"640\" height=\"360\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.thestar.com.my\/News\/Nation\/2015\/06\/05\/Photo-galleryTremors-shake-Sabah\/\">Some early reports<\/a> suggest landslides away from the mountain as well &#8211;
