{"id":15095,"date":"2015-05-16T08:19:39","date_gmt":"2015-05-16T08:19:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=15095"},"modified":"2015-05-16T08:19:39","modified_gmt":"2015-05-16T08:19:39","slug":"second-nepal-earthquake-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/05\/16\/second-nepal-earthquake-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Landslides from the second Nepal earthquake"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The second Nepal earthquake<\/h5>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/May_2015_Nepal_earthquake\">M=7.3 second Nepal earthquake<\/a> on Tuesday released only about 13% of the energy of the first event. but the location and shallow depth meant that it still had the potential to generate landslides, albeit over a smaller area.\u00a0 The region affected by the second Nepal earthquake had already been affected by landslides triggered by the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/April_2015_Nepal_earthquake\">Gorkha earthquake<\/a>, and this is one of the most landslide-prone regions of Nepal.<\/p>\n<p>Digital Globe continues to release imagery of the earthquake-affected area on their online platform, for which we are extremely grateful.\u00a0 They have now collected some images of the areas affected by the second Nepal earthquake, most notably along the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Araniko_Highway\">Araniko Highway<\/a>, which is the main link between Nepal and Tibet. \u00a0\u00a0 This image was collected on 13th May &#8211; a day after the second Nepal earthquake.\u00a0 The image quality is not great simply because there is so much dust in the air &#8211; and indeed the ground and buildings seem to be draped in a layer of dust, all generated by the landslides.\u00a0 But once you get your eye is you will see that there is massive landsliding across this area &#8211; they seem to be mostly shallow, disrupted rockslides, many of which originate from the ridge tops or other breaks of slope.\u00a0 The reasons why the second Nepal earthquake has generated so many landslides compared with the first event are not clear.\u00a0 This will need further study in the weeks ahead.<\/p>\n<p>There can be little doubt that this area is going to be extremely difficult in heavy monsoon rainfall.\u00a0 The monsoon is a little more than a month away.\u00a0 In that context, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-32759136\">the decision to refuse permission for the three Royal Air Force Chinook helicopters to operate in Nepal<\/a> looks utterly absurd.\u00a0 Having witnessed first hand the amazing role that these helicopters played in the aftermath of the 2005 Kashmir earthquake, where the damage was so much worse, the refusal of the Nepal Government to allow these machines to operate is absolutely crass.\u00a0 In particular, the ability of these helicopter to carry large volumes of material in underslung loads was crucial in Pakistan.\u00a0 It is just crazy to stop that happening in Nepal.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Some satellite imagery is now available via Digital Globe of the area affected by the second Nepal earthquake on Tuesday.
