{"id":14822,"date":"2015-03-21T08:49:26","date_gmt":"2015-03-21T08:49:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=14822"},"modified":"2015-03-21T09:44:58","modified_gmt":"2015-03-21T09:44:58","slug":"markovici-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/03\/21\/markovici-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Markovici: impressive drone footage of a large landslide in Montenegro"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Markovici landslide<\/h5>\n<p>Over the winter an impressive and very large landslide has developed on a key strategic highway at Markovici in Montenegro.\u00a0 This has destroyed the main road that links Podgorica, the capital city, to the coastal urban areas.\u00a0 The landslide, is described in <a href=\"http:\/\/www.balkaneu.com\/landslide-destroys-important-roads-montenegro\/\">a good news article from about a week ago<\/a>, has been captured in some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=I4nFSePwQt4\">very nice drone footage that is on Youtube<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p>.<br \/>\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/I4nFSePwQt4\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><br \/>\n.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide appears to be on this section of road, as seen on Google Earth:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14823\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Markovici-1-e1426925989801.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14823\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14823\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Markovici-1-e1426925989801.jpg\" alt=\"Markovici\" width=\"640\" height=\"396\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14823\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Google Earth<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The damage to the road near to Markovici is impressive &#8211; this is a still from the drone footage:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Markovici-2-e1426926241772.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14824\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Markovici-2-e1426926241772.jpg\" alt=\"Markovici\" width=\"640\" height=\"353\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>In many ways this is not an exceptional landslide &#8211; it is a classic reactivation of a translational slide, caused by heavy rainfall.\u00a0 The road has displaced laterally and dropped as the landslide has moved, and internal deformation of the landslide body has caused the buckling of the highway.<\/p>\n<p>Similar landslides occur all over the world &#8211; this is an example from near to Bharibise in northern Nepal:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/PICT0426-e1426926954170.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14825\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/PICT0426-e1426926954170.jpg\" alt=\"Markovici\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a>\u00a0 .<\/p>\n<p>Such landslides can be mitigated with standard techniques &#8211; with enough expertise and resource they can be stabilised and the road can be reinstated.\u00a0 The major challenge is the cost, especially in poorer countries.\u00a0 In Nepal this is usually managed by having a gravel surface and non-rigid structures, such as the gabians seen in the image,\u00a0 Each time the road moves it is regraded using a bulldozer.\u00a0 This results in a very poor quality road that is slow, uncomfortable and damaging to vehicles, but at least it can be reinstated reasonably quickly on each occasion.\u00a0 This is far from an ideal solution, but where resources are limited it is simply pragmatic.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A large translational landslide at Markovici in Montenegro has destroyed an important road.
