{"id":14792,"date":"2015-03-16T08:23:36","date_gmt":"2015-03-16T08:23:36","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=14792"},"modified":"2015-03-16T08:23:36","modified_gmt":"2015-03-16T08:23:36","slug":"yeager-airport-landslide-new-videos-on-youtube-portray-the-damage","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/03\/16\/yeager-airport-landslide-new-videos-on-youtube-portray-the-damage\/","title":{"rendered":"Yeager Airport landslide &#8211; new videos on Youtube portray the damage"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Yeager Airport landslide<\/h5>\n<p>The latest news on the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/03\/13\/yeager-airport-1\/\">Yeager Airport landslide<\/a> is that movement has new ceased, although the total displacements that have accumulated are now substantially larger than they were when I posted on Friday.\u00a0 The landslide has now destroyed the church at the foot of the slope for example, as this <a href=\"http:\/\/www.charlestondailymail.com\/article\/20150313\/DM01\/150319516\/1276\">Charleston Daily Mail image<\/a> shows:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14793\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Yeager-5-e1426491031362.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14793\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14793\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Yeager-5-e1426491031362.jpg\" alt=\"Yeager Airport landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"427\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14793\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Charleston Daily Mail<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=_b43vrZVnl4\">This Youtube video<\/a> captures rather nicely a fairly early stage in the movement event.\u00a0 Note that a quite large displacement had developed in the rear of the landslide.\u00a0 The internal deformation in the landslide mass appears to have been inducing smaller, flow-type failures in the frontal portion of the landslide:<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_b43vrZVnl4\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=QSO8OMXtpR8\">This is a really good drone film of the landslide mass<\/a>, showing the destroyed church and the flooding induced by the blockage in the river channel:<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/QSO8OMXtpR8\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This still image from the video shows the displaced mass of the landslide, which has now undergone a very substantial amount of internal deformation:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Yeager-6-e1426493333949.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-14794\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/03\/15_03-Yeager-6-e1426493333949.jpg\" alt=\"Yeager Airport landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"573\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The basal surface of the landslide remains unclear, but the lack of bedrock in the image suggests that my earlier hypothesis that the Yeager Airport landslide might have been induced by failure in the underlying substrate might not be correct.\u00a0 The rear scarp is now very steep in weak materials, suggesting that quite urgent work is needed to protect the remainder of the overrun area of the runway.\u00a0 The risk of more substantial flooding has been reduced by the completion of the channel around the tow of the landslide, meaning that the risk to the remaining houses on Keystone Drive has now reduced.\u00a0 Unfortunately though the residents will suffer considerable disruption for many months as the mitigation of this landslide is going to be a very major task.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Two new videos have appeared on Youtube showing the Yeager Airport landslide.
