href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Fox_Glacier\">Fox Glacier<\/a> in New Zealand is a very popular tourist attraction on the South Island &#8211; Wikipedia estimates that around 1000 people visit per day.\u00a0 Sadly, the Fax Glacier is retreating rapidly, in common with most glaciers as they respond to the effects of climate change.\u00a0 And the effects are dramatic &#8211; <a href=\"http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/news\/national\/264308\/glacier-retreat-changes-valley\">this pair of images<\/a>, taken ten years apart, shows just how quickly the glacier is http:\/\/www.radionz.co.nz\/news\/national\/264308\/glacier-retreat-changes-valley<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>As the Fox Glacier retreats, the surrounding hillslopes, which consist of glacial till, lose toe support.\u00a0 In consequence they can slip, although this process is surprisingly poorly investigated.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.stressdriven.com\/\">Kerry Leith of TU Munich<\/a>, pointed out via <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/stress_driven\">Twitter<\/a> this <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/119312940\">really interesting time lapse video of the glacier retreating<\/a>, which captures beautifully the creep of the slopes as the snout of the glacier transitions through:<\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" src=\"\/\/player.vimeo.com\/video\/119312940\" width=\"620\" href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\/glacier\">Brian Anderson<\/a> on <a href=\"https:\/\/vimeo.com\">Vimeo<\/a>.<\/em><\/p>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>In the early part of the video the slopes on the right side of Fox Glacier are moving (comparatively) rapidly.\u00a0\u00a0 By the end of the video the glacier has withdrawn from this section, and the slopes have stabilised.\u00a0 Thus, as the glacier snout moves up the valley a wave of slope movement moves with it.\u00a0 This process is being replicated worldwide as glaciers retreat in response to global warming.<\/p>\n<p>The video was compiled by Victoria
