{"id":14359,"date":"2015-01-22T07:45:55","date_gmt":"2015-01-22T07:45:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=14359"},"modified":"2015-01-22T07:45:55","modified_gmt":"2015-01-22T07:45:55","slug":"tsarap-river-zanskar-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/01\/22\/tsarap-river-zanskar-1\/","title":{"rendered":"The landslide on the Tsarap River in the Zanskar Valley &#8211; new images"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>The Tsarap River Landslide in Zanskar<\/h5>\n<p>A new set of much better images of the<a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/01\/21\/zanskar-valley-3\/\"> landslide on the Tsarap River<\/a> in the <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2015\/01\/20\/zanskar-river-landslide-2\/\">Zanskar Valley<\/a> have been <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/the-quint\/disaster-looms-in-ladakh-but-is-anybody-listening\/406548059512388\">posted on Facebook by Jaskrit Bawa<\/a>.\u00a0 The origin of the images appears to be the DC Office of LAHDC in Kargil.\u00a0 The most revealing image is this one, taken from a helicopter upstream of the barrier on the Tsarap River:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14361\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/01\/15_01-Zanskar-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14361\" class=\"wp-image-14361\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/01\/15_01-Zanskar-2.jpg\" alt=\"Tsarap River\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/01\/15_01-Zanskar-2.jpg 720w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/01\/15_01-Zanskar-2-300x225.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14361\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from DC Office, LAHDC, Kargil via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/the-quint\/disaster-looms-in-ladakh-but-is-anybody-listening\/406548059512388\">Jaskrit Bawa<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The landslide barrier appears to be tall but to have quite a narrow crest.\u00a0 Whilst there are many boulders in the debris, from these images there appears to be a great deal of fine-grained material as well.\u00a0 As an aside, the geological structure on the valley above seems to be quite unstable, with slope parallel discontinuities (bedding plans) that can act as detachment surfaces.<\/p>\n<p>A downstream view is also quite interesting:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_14362\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/01\/15_01-Zanskar-3-e1421911731258.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14362\" class=\"wp-image-14362 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2015\/01\/15_01-Zanskar-3-e1421911731258.jpg\" alt=\"Tsarap River\" width=\"640\" height=\"480\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-14362\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from DC Office, LAHDC, Kargil via <a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/notes\/the-quint\/disaster-looms-in-ladakh-but-is-anybody-listening\/406548059512388\">Jaskrit Bawa<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>This image both confirms the fine-grained nature of the landslide materials but also suggests that there may be some seepage through the landslide mass occurring, given that there appears to be water in the Tsarap River channel.\u00a0 That water is not clean, which may suggest that there is some internal erosion occurring.<\/p>\n<p>The National Disaster Management Agency <a href=\"http:\/\/www.scoopnews.in\/det.aspx?q=44028\">is reported<\/a> to be forming an expert group to help manage the hazard, which is welcome and wise.\u00a0 This is based on a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tribuneindia.com\/news\/jammu-kashmir\/lake-created-out-of-phuktal-river-poses-threat-in-kargil\/32821.html\">very sensible assessment of the situation<\/a> by the local authorities:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span class=\"storyText\">\u201cThe lake has been created around 90 km from the Padam area of Zanskar and beyond 43 km no one can go by foot. After consulting all local engineers, including Army engineers, we were not able to do anything,\u201d said Muhammad Sadiq Sheikh, Deputy Commissioner, Kargil.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>It is hard to know how serious the hazard is given the available information.\u00a0 On the face of it the size of the barrier, the length of the lake, the narrow dam crest and the possibly weak materials would suggest that it is potentially quite risky.\u00a0 But that will depend on the location of people and assets downstream and the nature of the materials that form the dam.\u00a0 The first step must be to put a monitoring system on the dam &#8211; in principle this is not difficult, although getting the information out of the valley will be a real challenge &#8211; in high mountain areas communications can be quite problematic.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>New images have been posted on Facebook showing the landslide on the Tsarap River in Zanskar, N.
