On16th May a slip happened on <span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>Nyiragongo  volcano in the Democratic Republic of Congo.&nbsp; The <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irinnews.org\/Report.aspx?ReportId=89198\">reports suggest<\/a> that 43 people are likely to have been killed, and a further 1,500 directly affected by this slide.<\/span><\/span><br \/><span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/><span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>Nyiragongo   volcano is active, so this is likely to be a lahar &#8211; i.e. a debris flow in volcanic deposits.&nbsp; This Google Earth image, although of low resolution, suggests that this is not the first failure on the east side of this volvano:<\/span><\/span><span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span><br \/><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_05-Congo-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_05-Congo-1.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span><br \/><\/span><\/span><br \/><span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span><\/span><\/span><br \/><span class=\"reportbody\" style=\"text-align: justify\"><span>The El Salvador landslides of last year provide a good indication of the nature of a lahar &#8211;
