{"id":129,"date":"2010-05-20T21:29:00","date_gmt":"2010-05-20T21:29:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/05\/20\/new-images-of-the-attabad-dam-and-spillway\/"},"modified":"2010-10-21T13:35:37","modified_gmt":"2010-10-21T17:35:37","slug":"new-images-of-the-attabad-dam-and-spillway","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2010\/05\/20\/new-images-of-the-attabad-dam-and-spillway\/","title":{"rendered":"New images of the Attabad dam and Spillway"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/\">Pamir Times<\/a> is now back in action after the owners were trapped on the road by the landslides caused by the recent heavy rain.&nbsp; Tonight they have <a href=\"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/2010\/05\/20\/most-recent-photographs-from-the-attabad-lake-barrier\/\">posted a selection of images<\/a> of the site taken yesterday or today &#8211; go and <a href=\"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/2010\/05\/20\/most-recent-photographs-from-the-attabad-lake-barrier\/\">take a look<\/a>, they are good.&nbsp; I will reproduce two here as they help to understand the current situation.<\/p>\n<p>First, this picture shows the spillway from the lake side:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_05-Pamir-spillway-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_05-Pamir-spillway-1.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>Two things to note here.&nbsp; First, the freeboard appears to be in the order of 3 m, suggesting that the NDMA figures are about right.&nbsp; Second, it looks to me like the far side of the spillway failed in the heavy rainfall earlier this week, which appears to have dumped a lot of loose material in the spillway, and it has narrowed it considerably.&nbsp; I may be wrong about this, but that is how it looks to me.&nbsp; Needless to say this is not a good sign.<\/p>\n<p>The second image shows the area downstream of the main landslide mass:<\/p>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><\/div>\n<div class=\"separator\" style=\"clear: both;text-align: center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_05-Pamir-spillway-2.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" border=\"0\" height=\"480\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2010\/10\/10_05-Pamir-spillway-2.jpg\" width=\"640\" \/><\/a><\/div>\n<p>The water that is flowing here is the seepage &#8211; there is clearly a considerable amount.&nbsp; Note just how deeply the channels have incised, which shows just how erosive the materials in this mudflow deposit actually are.&nbsp; Again, this is not a good sign.<\/p>\n<p>The lake is now <a href=\"http:\/\/pamirtimes.net\/2010\/05\/20\/hussaini-and-shishkat-without-clean-drinking-water\/\">18 km long<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Pamir Times is now back in action after the owners were trapped on the road by the landslides caused by the recent heavy rain.&nbsp; Tonight they have posted a selection of images of the site taken yesterday or today &#8211; go and take a look, they are good.&nbsp; I will reproduce two here as they help to understand the current situation.
