{"id":11067,"date":"2014-08-23T22:07:14","date_gmt":"2014-08-23T22:07:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=11067"},"modified":"2014-08-23T22:07:14","modified_gmt":"2014-08-23T22:07:14","slug":"dariali-gorge-08","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/08\/23\/dariali-gorge-08\/","title":{"rendered":"Dariali Gorge: another very large landslide from the Devdoraki glacier"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Dariali Gorge landslide number 2<\/h5>\n<p>In May this year <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/05\/19\/dariali-valley-1\/\">a very large landslide occurred at Devdoraki in Georgia<\/a>, blocking the strategically-important Dariali Gorge.\u00a0 This transpired to be a <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/05\/20\/dariali-valley-landslide\/\">large rockslope failure<\/a> from directly below the glacier, which turned into a high speed, long runout flow.\u00a0 I was lucky enough to be able to <a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/06\/19\/devdoraki-1\/\">feature some images of the landslide<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On 20th August, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.civil.ge\/eng\/article.php?id=27597\">another landslide occurred at the same site<\/a>, once again blocking the Dariali Gorge.\u00a0 This landslide, which is reported to have originated at the glacier, is reported to have been larger.\u00a0 The trigger was reportedly heavy rainfall.\u00a0 The landslide, and the resulting damage, are sufficiently serious to have needed <a href=\"http:\/\/en.trend.az\/regions\/scaucasus\/georgia\/2304430.html\">a visit to the site by the President of Georgia<\/a>.\u00a0 Two people lost their lives in the landslide, both workers from the nearby HEP project.<\/p>\n<p>There are some images on the internet of the landslide.\u00a0 The best that I have found are on this <a href=\"http:\/\/zonanews.ge\/%E1%83%A0%E1%83%90-%E1%83%9B%E1%83%93%E1%83%92%E1%83%9D%E1%83%9B%E1%83%90%E1%83%A0%E1%83%94%E1%83%9D%E1%83%91%E1%83%90%E1%83%90-%E1%83%93%E1%83%90%E1%83%A0%E1%83%98%E1%83%90%E1%83%9A%E1%83%98%E1%83%A1\/\">Georgian news website<\/a>.\u00a0 At times it is not entirely clear what they are showing, but they are interesting nonetheless.\u00a0 I suspect that these two images show the landslide deposit itself &#8211;
