{"id":11032,"date":"2014-08-21T22:27:46","date_gmt":"2014-08-21T22:27:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=11032"},"modified":"2014-08-21T22:27:46","modified_gmt":"2014-08-21T22:27:46","slug":"hiroshima-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/08\/21\/hiroshima-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Hiroshima: disastrous landslides with further rainfall warnings in effect"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Hiroshima landslides<\/h5>\n<p>On Wednesday, a suburb of Hiroshima in Japan was struck by a series of catastrophic rainfall-induced landslides, which resulted from a period of prolonged and exceptionally heavy rainfall.\u00a0 These landslides are reported to have killed 39 people, with as many as a further 43 people reported to be missing.\u00a0 Sadly, some of the deaths appear to be rescue staff who were overcome by subsequent slides.<\/p>\n<p>From a technical perspective, the best images I have found of these landslides are on the<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ibtimes.co.uk\/landslide-slams-into-hiroshima-western-japan-after-months-rain-overnight-1461862\"> IBT website<\/a>, which includes this overview of the site:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_11033\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/08\/14_08-Hiroshima-1-e1408659132819.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-11033\" class=\"size-full wp-image-11033\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/08\/14_08-Hiroshima-1-e1408659132819.jpg\" alt=\"Hiroshima\" width=\"640\" height=\"349\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-11033\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Reuters via IBT<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>These landslides appear to be channelised debris\/mud flows.\u00a0 It appears that they have started as small failures along watercourses that have entrained large volumes of material to become highly destructive flows.\u00a0 It appears that they have mostly consisted of very fine-grained materials, which is consistent with the bedrock geology, which is reportedly weathered granite.<\/p>\n<p>Unfortunately, there is further heavy rainfall forecast for this area, and at the time of writing <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/robertspeta\">Robert Speta<\/a> tweeted the following:<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" lang=\"en\"><p>Line of storms approaching Hiroshima.
