{"id":10628,"date":"2014-07-31T08:30:41","date_gmt":"2014-07-31T08:30:41","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=10628"},"modified":"2014-07-31T08:30:41","modified_gmt":"2014-07-31T08:30:41","slug":"malin-landslide-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/07\/31\/malin-landslide-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Malin landslide in Pune, India: a mass fatality mudslide yesterday"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Malin landslide<\/h5>\n<p>Early yesterday morning a very large landslide occurred in the village of Malin in Pune, western India.\u00a0 The landslide struck and effectively wiped out the village of Malin, located close to Bhimashankar in the western Ghats.\u00a0 It is thought that about 40 houses were buried &#8211; the location is (19.161, 73.688) if you wish to take a look.\u00a0 This is a perspective view of the village and slope:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/14_07-Malin-1-e1406792683296.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10631\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/14_07-Malin-1-e1406792683296.jpg\" alt=\"Malin landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"400\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<h5>Causes of the Malin landslide<\/h5>\n<p>Inevitably there is huge speculation in the Indian media about the causes and triggers of the Malin landslide.\u00a0 The trigger is clear &#8211; Left image is the landslide warning area, right is the measured precipitation<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"http:\/\/trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov\/publications_dir\/potential_landslide.html\">TRMM data <\/a>can also be used to generate a time series graph for rainfall in the area of the landslide:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10633\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/14_02-TRMM-3.gif\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10633\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10633\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/14_02-TRMM-3.gif\" alt=\"TRMM time series precipitation graph for the Malin landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"271\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10633\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><a href=\"http:\/\/trmm.gsfc.nasa.gov\/publications_dir\/potential_landslide.html\">TRMM time series precipitation graph<\/a> for the Malin landslide<\/p><\/div>\n<p>.<\/p>\n<p>The data suggests that as much as 600 mm of precipitation may have affected this area prior to the landslide occurring.\u00a0 In the media there is a <a href=\"http:\/\/timesofindia.indiatimes.com\/City\/Pune\/More-landslides-likely-in-5km-radius-of-Dimbhe-dam\/articleshow\/39329587.cms\">great deal of speculation<\/a> that the dam at <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Dimbhe_Dam\">Dimbhe<\/a>, a few kilometres downstream may have been a factor.\u00a0 But given the distance to the reservoir, the fact that the dam was completed in 2000 and the type of landslide this is not immediately obvious to me.\u00a0 There is also discussion about the role of development and deforestation, which may be far more important.\u00a0 The landslide appears to be a mudslide in deeply weathered soils (there is no evidence of involvement of large amounts of bedrock), so this slope would be highly susceptible to disturbance.\u00a0 The investigation will need to look at this in detail.<\/p>\n<p>The Google Earth images are hard to interpret well because of the low resolution of the digital elevation model, but I have been looking at them to see if this slope could have been identified as being potentially dangerous.\u00a0 This is a more detailed Google Earth perspective view of the site:<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/Malin-1.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-10634\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/Malin-1.jpg\" alt=\"Malin landslide\" width=\"640\" height=\"367\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/Malin-1.jpg 640w, https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/07\/Malin-1-300x172.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 640px) 100vw, 640px\" \/><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The image appears to be dated from February this year. There is no obvious signs of cracking or suchlike that I can see, which is not unexpected for a soil slide.\u00a0 However, the feature that I have marked A above is interesting &#8211; this appears to be a large topographic hollow.\u00a0 Such features can have the effect of concentrating intense rainfall during overland and soil flow.\u00a0 If this occurs, then pore water pressures in the soil in the hollow can become very high, initiating failure.\u00a0 If I was investigating this landslide I would be very interested in this hollow.\u00a0 The location directly above the village is deeply unfortunate if this feature was a factor.<\/p>\n<!-- AddThis Advanced Settings generic via filter on the_content --><!-- AddThis Share Buttons generic via filter on the_content -->","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The catastrophic Malin landslide in Pune, India yesterday probably killed over 100 people.
