{"id":10050,"date":"2014-06-20T07:04:37","date_gmt":"2014-06-20T07:04:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/?p=10050"},"modified":"2014-06-20T07:04:37","modified_gmt":"2014-06-20T07:04:37","slug":"monsoon-2014-1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/2014\/06\/20\/monsoon-2014-1\/","title":{"rendered":"Monsoon 2014: late but starting to have an impact (including two good new landslide videos)"},"content":{"rendered":"<h5>Monsoon 2014<\/h5>\n<p>As I have noted previously, the global landslide cycle is dominated by the effects of the South Asia summer monsoon, which brings heavy and prolonged rainfall to the world&#8217;s most landslide prone region.\u00a0 In 2014 the monsoon has arrived late, which has meant that the level of landsliding across Pakistan, India, Nepal and Bangladesh is currently lower than is usually the case.\u00a0 This image, from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imd.gov.in\/section\/nhac\/dynamic\/Monsoon_frame.htm\">IMD<\/a>, shows the monsoon precipitation deficit as of 19th June:<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_10051\" style=\"width: 650px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/06\/14_06-monsoon-1-e1403245814365.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-10051\" class=\"size-full wp-image-10051\" src=\"https:\/\/blogs.agu.org\/landslideblog\/files\/2014\/06\/14_06-monsoon-1-e1403245814365.jpg\" alt=\"Monsoon 2014\" width=\"640\" height=\"817\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-10051\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image from <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imd.gov.in\/section\/nhac\/dynamic\/Monsoon_frame.htm\">IMD<\/a><\/p><\/div>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>In South Asia, the highly landslide prone regions are in SW India (Kerala for example) and of course the Himalayan region, both of which are in a state of rainfall deficit at present.<\/p>\n<p>However, the monsoon front is now advancing across the region, and with it comes reports of landslides.\u00a0 In Nepal overnight there were<a href=\"http:\/\/www.myrepublica.com\/portal\/index.php?action=news_details&amp;news_id=77430\"> two major landslide incidents<\/a>:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>In Aglung VDC- 8, Nipane, in Gulmi District a landslide buried a house, leaving nine people dead and seven missing (and assuming that they were in the house the likelihood of their having survived is very low).\u00a0 This is the worst landslide incident in Nepal this year.<\/li>\n<li>In Khung VDC in\u00a0Pyuthan district a landslide killed five people and left another injured.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Meanwhile, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=chzn4pNDgQ0\">this very interesting landslide video has been posted on youtube<\/a>:<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"First live encounter to the LANDSLIDE | Rampur | Kinnaur | Himachal Pradesh | India\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/chzn4pNDgQ0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>This apparently occurred in Rampur, which is in Uttar Pradesh, India; the actual date of the event is not given.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, over in Vietnam, the rainy season is already having an impact.\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=2Yi-FYxMJvY\">This video is almost surreal<\/a> &#8211; do watch to the end!<\/p>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Landslide\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/2Yi-FYxMJvY?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>..<\/p>\n<p>I guess there was no way back for those motorbikes.\u00a0 The landslide appears to be a reactivation of a previous event in deeply weathered soil.
