Susan Avery Steps Down from AGU Board of Directors

By:

I wanted to let you know that Susan Avery has resigned from the AGU Board of Directors. She is joining the ExxonMobil Board of Directors on 2 February. Given that there could be a perceived conflict of interest, she offered to resign from her AGU Board position. While we were excited that she was elected to the AGU Board, and were looking forward to working together, we respect her decision.

She will bring scientific perspectives and expertise to the ExxonMobil Board, and we wish her the best as she takes on this position. Susan’s future endeavors will no doubt be guided by her commitment to AGU’s mission and to the Earth and space science community, as well as to the advancement of public and industry understanding of the role science plays in supporting our economy, national security and public health.

Fortunately, AGU governance is strong and well-organized. AGU’s Executive Committee will be consulting with our Governance Committee soon to determine how best to replace Susan’s position, and we will update you as soon as a decision has been made.
