Putting the fun in AGU Fall Meeting

We are only a couple of weeks away from #AGU20 and we’re excited! While we know this year’s meeting will be different from Fall Meetings in the past, we have created some great virtual experiences to make this year’s meeting fun and interactive.

We know we all come to the meeting for the science (and check out our suggested itineraries), but the Fall Meeting is also a great time to celebrate our community, see old friends and meet new colleagues.

We are planning to kick off the meeting with a science roll call of AGU sections and members from around the world. We are looking forward to seeing our community and reinforcing the global connections of the Earth and space sciences community.

AGU will also host several virtual happy hours including a behind the scenes tour with the California Academy of Sciences, a chance to hear from experts at the Adler Planetarium about the Apollo 13 mission, a historical tour of the Greenbrier’s secret bunker and an evening with the New Orleans Drink Lab.

We will also be welcoming back Baba Brinkman, a rap artist and comedian who synthesizes complex science into accessible and entertaining performances. Baba will attend #AGU20 to perform his climate raps, produce “Rap Up” summaries of the meeting, create freestyle raps based on attendee’s comments and participate in discussions and panels. If you have not seen Baba at previous Fall Meetings, you are in for a treat!

In between posters and sessions, you’ll also want to check out our virtual exhibit hall, where you’ll be able to interact with dozens of exhibitors and maybe even score some virtual swag.

AGU staff will also be at AGU Central to answer your questions about AGU and our programs, from how to publish in our journals to how to participate in science policy events to how to become involved in community science.

We know it will be hard to replicate the in-person experience of chatting with colleagues while in line for coffee or grabbing lunch, but we will have a networking tool where you’ll be able to set up either one-on-one meetings with people or create a group discussion. You can also reserve a pod or head over to AGU Connect to engage with other attendees. The student lounge will also be a place for students and early career scientists to meet each other and find out about mentoring, get career advice and meet new friends.

There are also dozens of video backgrounds you can start using now on your video calls to get you pumped up for the meeting. And don’t forget to create your #AGYou and share it with us on social media.

We also know that these last weeks before the meeting can be hectic and we’ve put together some tools and resources to help you with your presentations and posters. We’re also available for “office hours” over the next few weeks.

Remember: the deadline to create and publish your virtual poster or submit your pre-recorded oral presentation for #AGU20, except for those in Union sessions, has been extended to Monday, 23 November at 17:00 PST (UTC -8).
