AGU’s Ethics and Equity Center wins ASAE Power of A award

By:

I am excited to announce that AGU’s Ethics and Equity Center has received the American Society of Association Executives (ASAE) Power of A award.

AGU’s Ethics and Equity Center, which was established in 2019 to address intersecting issues of gender and racial equity in the geosciences and across the STEM enterprise, won the 2021 Gold Award for extraordinary contributions and efforts to enrich lives, create a more competitive workforce, drive innovation and make a better world.

The AGU Ethics and Equity Center, which brings together resources and leading practices to proactively address issues of equity and access in STEM, is just one example of how AGU and the Earth and space sciences community — AGU staff, volunteers, leaders and members — are helping to shape the culture of science, and influence other disciplines, institutions and organizations.

Changing the culture will take time, but together we are making great strides toward ensuring the Earth and space sciences works for everyone.

For example, since its inception, AGU and the Ethics and Equity Center has used its power to sponsor custom interactive workshops at scientific conferences across the U.S. featuring live improvisational actors; developed and implemented unique educational webinars and training videos around harassment, implicit bias, and ethical and inclusive decision making; developed new organizational work-climate assessment DEI guides and tools; and has promoted new online resources, policies and practices for adoption by others.

The quality and success of this work has been recognized and amplified across STEM organizations through grants from leading foundations, such as the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, the National Science Foundation and Rockefeller Family Fund.

Most recently AGU has also helped establish a consortium of 130 scientific associations to further extend the reach and influence of the Ethics and Equity Center across STEM fields. Through these efforts, we estimate our direct reach on advancing DEI to be over 1.5 million members of the science community.

AGU is excited to receive the 2021 Power of A award, having previously won two Power of A awards in 2020 for its Centennial programs and in 2019 for the Thriving Earth Exchange.

ASAE’s Power of A (association) Awards, the industry’s highest honor, recognize the association community’s valuable contributions on the local, national and global levels. The Power of A Awards reward the outstanding accomplishments of associations and industry professionals who work tirelessly to solve problems, and strengthen lives, the workforce, the economy and the world.

Please join me in not only celebrating our achievements but also using this honor as a reaffirmation of our commitment to creating a more diverse, inclusive and equitable Earth and space sciences community.
