In a special election, AGU members have elected Catherine Coleman Flowers to serve on the AGU Board of Directors. The AGU Leadership Development and Governance Committee would like to thank everyone who voted in this special election to fill a vacancy on the Board.

Catherine Coleman Flowers.

Catherine Coleman Flowers has been elected to the AGU Board of Directors.

In May 2022, Dr. Jalonne White-Newsome accepted a position as Senior Director for Environmental Justice for the White House Council on Environmental Quality. The new role required Dr. White-Newsome to step down from her position on the AGU Board of Directors.

To fill the vacancy, the AGU Leadership Development and Governance Committee agreed to hold a special election, and Catherine Coleman Flowers was nominated to run unopposed. More information about the nomination and recommendation process can be found in the From the Prow post published on 7 November 2022.

Voting was open from 9 to 22 November 2022. In that time 2,528 validated ballots were cast. The number of eligible voters was 37,004, making the participation rate 7.68%. This is higher participation than the last special election in 2020, where 6.08% of eligible voters participated. Surveys and comments by participants revealed that 88.9% of participants were satisfied or very satisfied with the process. Input from voters will be reviewed by the AGU Leadership Development and Governance Committee as they prepare for future elections.

Please join us in congratulating Catherine Coleman Flowers on her election to the AGU Board.
