The 14 August 2021 M=7.2 earthquake in Haiti triggered many landslides. A recent paper (Havenith et al. 2022) suggests that this might in part have been because the slopes were preconditioned (weakened) by earlier earthquakes and storms.

Today has been a busy day in the natural hazards world. Last night in unrealted incidents a sinkhole opened without warning in central Germany and a landslide killed a small child and his mother in Italy. Meanwhile, Hurricane Tomas has caused widespread destruction in St Lucia and is still forecast to pass directly over the earthquake-affected areas of Haiti.
