All The Light We Cannot See

One image in 16 different wavelengths of light from NOAA’s new weather satellite GOES-16 (GOES-R at launch). The upper left is the blue visible light wavelength. Next is Red. Next is near IR, not visible to our eyes, but very sensitive to vegetation. GOES-16 First Images/Animations Released

The GOES-R (Now named GOES-16) satellite is working! NOAA released the first images and animations today. The satellite is still in the test stage and will be for months but we should start seeing non-operational data by May. The image above is a high-resolution full disc shot. GOES-R First Image Will Be Released Tomorrow

The first image from GOES-R will be out tomorrow.The “first light” image will be released in Seattle tomorrow at the AMS Annual Meeting, and we will start to see irregular imagery in May as testing continues. New satellite could provide better data for hurricane prediction

The launch of the GOES-R geostationary satellite in October 2016 could herald a new era for predicting hurricanes, a new study finds. The wealth of information from this new satellite, at time and space scales not previously possible, combined with advanced statistical hurricane prediction models, could enable more accurate predictions in the future, according to the researchers.

GOES 14 Rapid Scan images of Hurricane Cristobal

This is the kind of satellite imagery we will see daily when GOES R launches in 2016, and it will be even higher resolution spatially and temporally. GOES 14 is a spare satellite that is turned on and checked out from time to time. It can take one minute rapid scan images. GOES 13 Weather Satellite Hit By Micrometeoroid

The GOES 13 weather satellite problem a couple pf weeks ago was apparently caused by tiny meteorite travelling several kilometers per second.
