Instruments designed to record earthquakes revealed information about debris-ﬂow speed, the width of the ﬂow and the size of boulders carried by the January 2017 mudslide in Montecito, California, and the location of the event, suggesting that the current generation of seismometers in the ﬁeld could be used to provide an early warning of an incoming debris ﬂow to residents in mudslide-prone areas.

Researchers have discovered a large concentration of sediment deposits at the end of Monterey Canyon, an underwater chasm beneath Monterey Bay, California. The sediment deposits are relatively young and may be more likely to catalyze underwater landslides than other sections of the canyon, according to the researchers who presented their discovery at the 2016 American Geophysical Union Fall Meeting.

New data have unveiled an unexpected geological consequence of northern California’s ongoing drought. Eel River Basin landslides slowed down twice between 2009 and 2015, a period when the region experienced unprecedented drought, according to new research.
