It was highly likely that the new GOES-R satellite (Now GOES 16) would be moved to where the GOES-East satellite is now when it becomes operational in November. This is now official, with the announcement coming from NOAA today. By moving GOES 16 to 75 degrees east, we will see virtually all of the Tropical Atlantic and still have good coverage of the U.S. all the way past the Rockies. The GOES-S satellite will go to the west location when it is launched next year.

The images below are from today and show the current location of GOES East and where GOES 16 is now.

The GOES-13 (GOES-East) is at 75 degrees west longitude over the Equator.

Notice, that even at the East location, the new GOES-16 will be able to give decent coverage to California. Those in Alaska and Hawaii will have to wait for another year or so to see the new era of real-time imagery from space.
