Explore the DGMR rock garden
Posted by Callan
I shot this gigapan (900 images) last Thursday during the lunch break of the annual “Geology of Virginia” symposium hosted by the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Department of Geology and Mineral Resources.
It shows the rock garden outside the DGMR’s offices in Charlottesville, a place where they have collected charismatic megasamples from across the state’s five physiographic provinces as a showcase for the diversity of Virginia’s geology.
You can explore the rock garden full screen here.

Callan Bentley is an assistant professor of geology at Northern Virginia Community College in Annandale, Virginia. He is particularly interested in structural geology and the evolution of the Appalachian mountain belt. Callan draws cartoons and writes for EARTH magazine. He lives in Washington, D.C.

Cool! I’m a sucker for the coquinas. And that Skolithos is pretty sweet, too!
Callan – I was going to ask you about a guide – for the ones we can see numbers for – BUT, I thought – wait a minute , this shouldn’t be too hard – and – voila: http://www.dmme.virginia.gov/DMR3/dmrpdfs/vamin/VM 48_2_3.pdf
I better tell Dave Spears that there needs to be some Mississippian rocks in there, like a nice ooid grainstone.
….Oh, and Great Photo! (Sorry about that!).
