Geoblogger & social media roundup at AGU 2011

Posted by Jessica Ball

In between not doing any Black Friday shopping (yay for my wallet!), spending time with my family, and trying to fit in a little bit of research time, blogging has taken a hit this week. So I thought I’d do something that I did last year in preparation for AGU’s Fall Meeting, and give you a roundup of all the social-media-related activities you can partake in this year! You can keep involved even if you’re not attending the meeting itself, and there are sure to be plenty of posts, Tweets and other conversations by geobloggers during and after the meeting.

  • Register as a member of the media, or see who will be there
  • Check out the Blog Roll, and add yourself to the list
  • Attend the Social Media Soiree on Monday, Dec. 5th (6:00 PM – 8:00 PM; InterContinental Ballroom C)
  • Try out a workshop or two! The Communicating Your Science Panel & Workshops (Sunday, Dec. 4th) includes a workshop co-hosted by AGU Blogger Callan Bentley (Mountain Beltway) on how to use social media to communicate science. There’s also a Science Video Workshop on Tuesday, Dec. 6th, where three Hollywood filmmakers will show you how to successfully use video to explore scientific topics. Finally, on Wednesday Dec. 7th, there’s a workshop on communicating climate science using a variety of media platforms (and AGU Blogger Dan Satterfield of Dan’s Wild Wild Science Journal will be part of that one!) Note – most workshops require advance registration or an invite.
  • Have lunch with AGU’s Congressional Science and Mass Media Fellows and find out about the fellowship programs that give AGU scientists a chance to work in media outlets and in Congressional offices.
  • Follow the conversation between geotweeps before, during and after the meeting with the #AGU11 hashtag, or see who’s Tweeting all the time on @theAGU’s Tweeting AGU11 page!
  • For geobloggers: don’t forget about the Geobloggers Lunch, Wednesday Dec. 7th, 12:30-2pm, Sierra B  (San Francisco Marriott Marquis) – Note – the lunch is by invite only.
  • Listen to a talk or visit a poster in one of the following sessions – they all involve topics related to science communication and social media! (More information on the sessions and abstracts for specific talks can be found on the Fall Meeting’s Abstract Central page.)
