Can’t let these die – everyone else has a weekly feature, and I need something to waste time on when I’m supposed to be teaching myself MATLAB.
This was one of the funniest things I’ve ever seen at the top of a mountain. I have to wonder if anyone ever told the benchmark-installers that they forgot something…
Jessica Ball is a volcanologist at the U.S. Geological Survey, researching volcanic hydrothermal systems and stability, and doing science communication for the California Volcano Observatory. She previously worked at the Geological Society of America's Washington DC Policy Office, learning about the intersection of Earth science and legislative affairs. Her Mendenhall postdoc and PhD focused on how water affects the stability of volcanoes, and involved both field investigations and numerical modeling applications. Her blogging covers a range of topics, from her experiences in academic geosciences to science outreach and communication to her field and lab work in volcanology.

That’s a nice one. If you wrote The Director, like it says, the only thing you could say would be: ‘you know, the one called Fish Lake.’ Gosh, there’s got to be a million or so Fish Lakes! :DOr, you could just send him your GPS reading…
I haven’t seen an elevation on a benchmark for awhile now. usually it doesn’t even have a name just a catalog number that might mean something to someone.
